May is the month everything works at once: warm days without the summer heat, lilac and chestnut blossom across the parks, the beer gardens full every evening, and light until nearly nine.

It is also the month of the Prague Spring International Music Festival, which opens on 12 May with Smetana's Má vlast and fills the Rudolfinum and the Municipal House for three weeks. On the first of May couples kiss under blossoming trees on Petřín, by the statue of the poet Mácha — a tradition locals do take seriously.

The catch is that everyone knows this. Two public holidays, 1 and 8 May, create long weekends that fill the hotels, and the Prague Marathon closes the centre on one Sunday. Book early and avoid the holiday weekends if you can.
