🍸 After dark

Cocktail bars & nightlife in Prague

Prague's quiet superpower after dark is the cocktail bar: a scene that keeps placing on the world's-best lists, hidden behind unmarked doors within five minutes of the Old Town Square. Plus the jazz cellars, the industrial clubs of Holešovice, and the honest word on the five-storey one.

The cocktail city

Hemingway Bar started it: absinthe and rum done seriously in a small room that still fills by eight. Black Angel's pours in a 1920s cellar under the square; AnonymouS does theatre with its Fawkes masks; Bugsy's has been at it since 1995. Book a table for any of them at the weekend — walking in works on a Tuesday.

Music

The jazz tradition here is real and was politically loaded under communism. Reduta is where Bill Clinton played the saxophone in 1994; Jazz Dock is the modern glass box on the water and the better night out. For clubs, Roxy holds the centre and Cross Club in Holešovice is the one worth the tram: two floors of welded-scrap sculpture that happens to be a venue.

The honest word

Karlovy Lázně advertises itself as central Europe's biggest club — five floors in a former bathhouse by the bridge. It is a rite of passage for the stag-party circuit and precisely as good as that sounds. Go ironically or not at all.

Staying out of trouble

Prague nightlife is safe. The traps are commercial: bars that materialise a bill triple the menu, and the non-bank exchange offices between you and the club. Choose the venue yourself, count your change, and pay by card in koruna.

Frequently asked

What time does nightlife start in Prague?

Pubs fill from five, cocktail bars from eight, clubs barely move before midnight. Last metro is around midnight; after that the night trams (numbers starting with 9) run all night.

Do Prague cocktail bars need reservations?

The famous ones, yes, from Thursday to Saturday — Hemingway and Black Angel's fill early. Midweek you can usually walk in.

Where the journey goes next

Prague, Vienna and Budapest are the classic Central European trio, a train ride apart — and Bucharest is where many of our readers start from. Same format, same honesty about the money, written city by city.
