Plan

Build a Prague itinerary

Tell it how long you have and what you came for. It builds a day-by-day plan that keeps each day in one part of the city — the Castle side, the historic centre or the neighbourhoods — which is the difference between a good day here and an exhausting one.

Pace

Each day stays in one part of the city on purpose. Climbing to the Castle and back down twice in a day is the single easiest way to waste an afternoon here.

Day 1

Mostly the Castle side · 7 h of activity

  1. Morning

    Prague Castle and St. Vitus

Tram 22 to Pražský hrad, then the cathedral, the Old Royal Palace and Golden Lane on the circuit ticket. Be at the gates by nine — security and the cathedral queue both build through the morning.

  2. Afternoon

    Down through Malá Strana

Walk down Nerudova from the Castle, into St. Nicholas Church, through the Wallenstein Garden and out to Kampa and the John Lennon Wall. Downhill all the way, which is the right direction.

  3. Evening

    The river after dark

The Castle and Charles Bridge are floodlit and line up along one stretch of water. Either an evening cruise, or free from the Smetana embankment by the National Theatre.

Day 2

Mostly the historic centre · 7 h of activity

  1. Morning

Old Town Square and the clock tower

The astronomical clock, then up the Old Town Hall tower for the view over the Týn spires. The hourly show is short; the tower is the better use of the queue.

  2. Afternoon

    The Jewish Quarter

The synagogues and the Old Jewish Cemetery on the Jewish Museum ticket, plus the Old-New Synagogue separately. Closed on Saturdays and Jewish holidays — the planner cannot know your dates, so check.

  3. Evening

    A proper beer hall evening

Lokál for tank Pilsner and dumplings, U Fleků for the dark lager brewed on site since 1499, or U Zlatého tygra if you can get a seat. The waiter marks your beers on a slip; you pay at the end.

Day 3

Mostly the neighbourhoods · 6.5 h of activity

  1. Morning

    Vyšehrad and its ramparts

The other castle, on a rock over the river: the basilica, the national cemetery where Dvořák and Mucha lie, and ramparts with a view back to the Castle and almost nobody on them.

  2. Afternoon

    Vinohrady and Riegrovy sady

Art Nouveau streets, the modernist church on Jiřího z Poděbrad, a specialty coffee, and the Riegrovy sady beer garden for sunset over the Castle. Where Prague actually lives.

  3. Evening

Letná park and the beer garden

The Metronome where Stalin's statue stood, then the beer garden under the chestnut trees with the whole line of Vltava bridges below. The single best view-to-price ratio in the city.
