Prague Castle

4.7(202,156)out of 5 on GoogleClosed · opens 06:00📍 Hradčany · Praha 1

Not a single castle but a walled town on a ridge above the Vltava, and the seat of Czech rulers for more than a thousand years.

Prince Bořivoj founded it in the late ninth century. Bohemian kings, Holy Roman emperors and, since 1918, Czechoslovak and Czech presidents have all ruled from here, which is why the complex mixes a Romanesque basilica, a Gothic cathedral, a Renaissance summer palace and twentieth-century courtyards remodelled by Jože Plečnik for President Masaryk. It is often described as the largest coherent castle complex in the world.

The courtyards, the grounds and the entrance area of St. Vitus Cathedral are free. The basic circuit — St. Vitus Cathedral, the Old Royal Palace, St. George's Basilica and Golden Lane with Daliborka Tower — cost 450 Kč for adults when checked on prague.eu in September 2026, and is valid for two days. See Prague Castle tickets.

Come early, before the tour groups, or late in the afternoon. The guard changes on the hour at the main gate, with the full ceremony at noon. To avoid the climb, take tram 22 to the Pražský hrad stop and walk down through the castle into Malá Strana.
