The fixed points of the Prague year
Whatever is or is not listed above, these come round annually and are worth planning against.
- Spring — Easter markets on the Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square, and Čarodějnice on the evening of 30 April: bonfires on Ladronka and Petřín for the old witches' night.
- May — the Prague Spring International Music Festival opens on 12 May, the anniversary of Smetana's death, with *Má vlast* at the Rudolfinum. Tickets for the opening go months ahead.
- Summer — the beer gardens on Letná and in Riegrovy sady run all season, the Náplavka riverbank fills with markets and boats, and Letní Letná brings contemporary circus in August.
- Autumn — the Dvořák Prague festival in September, burčák (cloudy, barely fermented young wine) sold on the street for a few weeks around the harvest, then Signal Festival turning buildings into light installations in October, and Designblok.
- 17 November — the Velvet Revolution anniversary on Národní třída. Not a festival: candles, speeches and a crowd at the memorial where the 1989 students were beaten.
- Late November to early January — the Christmas markets, principally the Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square, with Mikuláš on the evening of 5 December, when Saint Nicholas, an angel and a devil work the streets.
