January splits in two. The first week still carries the Christmas lights, and the Old Town Square market usually stays up until Epiphany on the 6th; after that the city empties, hotel prices fall to their lowest point of the year, and Prague becomes a place you have largely to yourself.
That second half is the argument. Charles Bridge at nine in the morning is empty, the Castle has no queue, and the vaulted beer halls and the grand cafés do exactly the job they were built for — somewhere warm to spend an afternoon while it is minus three outside. Restaurant tables need no booking, and the museums are quiet on weekday mornings.
The cost is daylight — it is dark by half past four — and the risk of a grey, damp week. Come for the indoor city, not for the views, and January is the best value in the calendar.
