August combines peak crowds with the hottest weeks of the year, and the historic centre can feel less like a city than a queue. It is also when many locals are on holiday, so some neighbourhood restaurants close for a week or two.
It still works if you plan around it. Stay in Vinohrady, Karlín or Smíchov rather than the Old Town, do the Castle at opening time, and give the evenings to the riverbank and the beer gardens. Letní Letná brings contemporary circus to Letná park for much of the month.
Day trips are at their busiest too: book trains to Český Krumlov and Kutná Hora ahead rather than on the day.
