October is Prague at its most atmospheric. Morning fog sits on the Vltava and lifts off the bridges by eleven, the parks on Petřín and Letná turn red and gold, and the crowds thin noticeably after the first week.
In the middle of the month Signal Festival turns churches, squares and façades into light installations for four evenings — free, popular and genuinely good. Designblok brings design shows to galleries across the city.
The days shorten fast and it can turn cold by the end of the month, but hotel prices drop too. 28 October, the founding of Czechoslovakia in 1918, is a public holiday. Clocks go back on the last Sunday.
