Prague with children
Free public transport under 15, one of Europe's best zoos — and cobbles that make a light stroller essential.
The practical things first
- Transport: children under 15 travel free on Prague public transport; from 6 they need proof of age.
- Strollers: the centre is cobbled and full of stairs. A light, folding stroller or a carrier is far easier than a big pram. Most metro stations have lifts, but not all of them do.
- Food: Czech pub food is child-friendly by default — schnitzel, potatoes, dumplings — and most restaurants will bring a half portion if you ask.
The best days out
Prague Zoo in Troja is one of the best zoos in Europe and a full day on its own, on a hillside above the river. Combine it with a boat up the Vltava in summer.
Petřín hill is an easy half-day: the funicular up (free with a 24- or 72-hour ticket), the mirror maze and the lookout tower at the top, and a long walk down through the orchards.
The National Technical Museum in Letná has trains, cars and aircraft in one enormous hall, and it holds children for hours.
Paddle boats from Slovanský ostrov, near the National Theatre, are the summer favourite — and the view of the Castle from the water costs nothing extra.
What to skip
The astronomical clock's hourly show is less than a minute of small figures, seen over a wall of heads. Walk past at a quiet moment rather than waiting in the crowd on the hour.
