📅 Essentials
When to visit
May, June and September are the comfortable months. December is magical and busy; January is empty and cheap.
The short version
- Best overall: May, June, September — warm, long evenings, beer gardens open.
- Best value: January and February — cold and grey, but empty and the cheapest hotels of the year.
- Most atmospheric: December for the Christmas markets; October for fog on the river and the Signal light festival.
- Hardest: July and August — hot, and the Old Town at midday is a queue.
What changes through the year
Prague has a central European climate: cold winters with short days, and summers that now bring real heatwaves. The shoulder months are the sweet spot, when walking all day on cobbles is a pleasure rather than an endurance test. Every month has its own page with thirty-year climate averages and a verdict — start at the weather page.
Days that change your plans
- Public holidays: 1 January, Good Friday, Easter Monday, 1 and 8 May, 5 and 6 July, 28 September, 28 October, 17 November and 24–26 December. On several of them large shops close.
- 24 December is the main Czech Christmas celebration; most shops and restaurants close from the afternoon.
- Saturdays close the Jewish Museum sites.
- Long weekends in May fill the hotels.
Booking ahead
For May, September and the Christmas market weekends, book accommodation well ahead. Otherwise Prague rarely sells out outside a big congress or event.
