PID tickets and passes

One system

PID, Prague Integrated Transport, covers the three metro lines, the trams, city buses, trolleybuses, the river ferries and trains within the city. The metro, trams and most buses are run by DPP, the city transport company. One ticket system covers the lot.

Time, not rides

Prague tickets are valid for a length of time, not a number of journeys. A 30-minute or 90-minute ticket lets you change as often as you like until it runs out; a 24-hour or 72-hour ticket does the same for a day or three, and for most visitors it is the obvious choice — it also covers the Petřín funicular and one large piece of luggage. Current fares, with the date they were checked, are on what it costs.

Buy through the PID Lítačka app (slightly cheaper than paper), from machines at metro stations and major stops, or by tapping a contactless card on the readers inside many trams.

Validating

A paper ticket must be stamped once, at the start — in the yellow validators at metro entrances or on board trams and buses. After that, do not stamp it again. An unstamped ticket counts as no ticket, and ticket inspectors work in plain clothes, showing a badge only when they check you.

What it does not cover

The Airport Express (AE) bus to the main station has its own fare, and ordinary tickets are not valid on it. The historic tram line 41 and other vintage routes are separate too.

The lines worth knowing

• Metro A (green) runs from the airport connection at Nádraží Veleslavín through Malostranská, Staroměstská and Muzeum.
• Metro B (yellow) and C (red) cross at Florenc and Můstek/Muzeum; C serves the main railway station.
• Tram 22 climbs to Prague Castle and is the scenic ride — and the pickpockets' favourite.
• Night trams (numbers in the 90s) run all night after the metro closes around midnight.

Children

Children under 15 travel free in Prague. From 6 they should carry proof of age, and under-6s must travel with someone older than ten.
