Žižkov Television Tower
A 216-metre concrete and steel rocket rising out of the rooftops of Žižkov, loved and hated in equal measure, and climbed by giant babies.
The tower was built between 1985 and 1992 as a transmitter, in the last years of the communist regime, and its brutal futuristic form was controversial from the start. Part of an old Jewish cemetery on the site was cleared for its construction; a fragment of the cemetery still survives beside it.
In 2000, David Černý attached a set of giant, faceless crawling babies to its shafts, originally as a temporary installation. They became so popular that they stayed, and the tower turned from an eyesore into a symbol of Prague's irreverent humour. The babies on the tower today are replicas; some originals can be seen on Kampa Island.
An observation deck about 93 metres up gives a 360-degree view over the city, and the tower also has a restaurant and a single-room hotel suspended in one of its pods. It stands in Žižkov, a lively neighbourhood of pubs and bars, a short tram ride or a walk from Vinohrady.
